In a remarkable shift in England's foreign policy, Edward Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, explicitly emphasized the illegality of Israel's occupation in his recent speech. This statement came as Andrea Burnham, the Prime Minister, stood behind him, reflecting a change in the government's approach to the Palestinian issue.
Change in England's Policy
Miliband referred to "settler terrorism" and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank during this speech, citing statistics that 65 Palestinian communities have been displaced since 2023. He also mentioned the alarming situation in Gaza, referring to the repeated blockage of aid and the destruction of hospitals and clinics. These positions represent a significant shift compared to previous statements by former officials, particularly Keir Starmer, who stated in October 2023 that Israel has the right to cut off electricity and water to Gaza.
Challenges Ahead
Despite these advancements, criticisms continue to emphasize that merely sanctioning settlement goods is not enough. The Israeli occupying regime is, in fact, a state-sponsored project directly supported by the Israeli government, and sanctioning contractors without addressing the government's role in this issue seems only a superficial remedy. More than 80 international organizations, including the International Center for Justice for Palestinians, highlighted the government's role in these projects in a comprehensive report and emphasized the need for accountability for international crimes.
Miliband also promised to take actions against companies and individuals involved in the development of settlements. These actions will include imposing strict sanctions to prevent the expansion of settlements. However, serious questions remain about the actual impact of these policies on the current situation of Palestinians.
It seems that to maintain international credibility and adhere to human rights, England must go beyond these merely symbolic actions and seriously confront the issue of Israel's occupation.
