On Tuesday, the Australian government announced its "groundbreaking" reforms that allow social media users to opt out of algorithms. This initiative, titled "My Feed, My Way," seems to aim at bringing users back to an experience reminiscent of 2012, when the internet was largely not dependent on advertising and complex algorithms.
Back to the Past, A Day Without Algorithms
I must confess that I love social media algorithms. These algorithms uniquely understand my curious and crazy mind, knowing exactly which videos entertain me and which memes can distract me from the slow collapse of humanity. However, with these new reforms, instead of continuing in this personalized world, I decided to turn off the algorithm for 24 hours and see what social media really looked like.
An Unexpected Experience
That same day, I randomly came across a video of a woman on Instagram accidentally pouring buckets of eels on a Chinese train. The eels quickly slithered among the passengers, and it seemed that no one was particularly surprised. This funny and unexpected scene made me reminisce about the older days when social media was not just about grabbing users' attention but was more about sharing real and unpredictable moments.
Still, can we return to this era? Can we really distance ourselves from algorithms and return to a pure social experience?
It seems that the Australian government intends with these reforms to give users more control over their online experience. Now we must see if this action can truly lead to fundamental changes in how we interact with the digital world or not.
