The global war on terror, which began after the September 11 attacks, has profoundly impacted global politics, and Europe has not been exempt from this rule. The far-right parties of this continent, which had always been marginalized before, have gained significant political positions due to this war and the Islamophobic narratives that rapidly spread in society.
Islamophobia as a Political Tool
After 2001, negative and fear-inducing narratives about Muslims and Islam as a serious threat to Western security led to the formation of strict and restrictive policies in European countries. These narratives took root not only in the media but also in the macro policies of European countries, providing a justification for the far-right's extremist actions. Far-right parties used this created atmosphere to attract public opinion and ride the wave of anti-Islamic sentiments.
Deep Social Consequences
These changes not only led to an increase in the political power of the far-right but also impacted the social fabric of European societies. The rise of discrimination, violence, and racism in some countries is clearly observable. Now, far-right parties are heard as the voice of protesters against "changes" and "cultural threats," and some of them have achieved significant victories in elections.
In fact, the war on terror has become a tool for promoting extremist ideologies, and it cannot be ignored that global and local policies are currently influenced by these narratives. This situation seems to have only benefited the far-right and could have dire consequences for the future of multicultural societies in Europe.
