Russian Airstrike in Zaporizhzhia: Three Civilians Killed by an Autonomous Drone

On July 6, 2023, a Russian drone exploded at a gas station in the city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of three civilians. One of the victims, Tetyana Bobynets, an 18-year-old accounting student, appeared to be uninjured despite the severity of the explosion and shockwave.

Tetyana Bobynets was quickly transferred to the hospital but lost her life shortly thereafter. Two other civilians, aged 41 and 48, also died in this attack. One of Bobynets' professors, Tetyana Melikhova, from Zaporizhzhia, stated that she was the only child in her family and that her mother has "lost the meaning of life" after her death.

Use of Autonomous Drones and Artificial Intelligence

This attack is recognized as the first recorded instance of Russia using an autonomous drone controlled by artificial intelligence (AI). Analyses indicate that this drone was equipped with a mini-computer with AI from the American technology company Nvidia instead of a conventional antenna, giving it automatic identification and targeting capabilities.

Analysts believe that AI-powered drones are just the tip of the iceberg in modern warfare developments. These systems can process information rapidly and coordinate military forces on the battlefield. Marina Miran, a researcher at King's College London, explained that these systems act as a central commander tracking the locations of friendly and enemy forces.

Challenges and the Future of Automated Warfare

The use of military AI systems raises ethical and legal challenges. Even if humans remain in the final decision-making process, research has shown that AI systems can indirectly influence choices. Additionally, the risks posed by AI algorithms and the inability of these systems to accurately identify targets are other significant issues.

Serhiy Beshkerenov, an advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, pointed out that automated military systems will be fully independent in the future, with search and attack operations conducted automatically. These developments indicate a fierce competition between Russia and Ukraine in military technologies.
