Saudi Arabia Requests Military Assistance from Iran to Counter the Houthis

Saudi Arabia has moved towards a tougher military stance following a deadlock in efforts to reduce tensions with Tehran. Riyadh, concerned about the escalation of war and instability in the region, is now calling for Iran's involvement in the Houthi issue.

Postponement of Diplomatic Meetings

A meeting that was scheduled for September 14 regarding the Strait of Hormuz mechanism between Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries has been postponed at Saudi Arabia's request. This decision reflects Riyadh's dissatisfaction with the attacks from Iran-backed proxy groups.

Options Facing Saudi Arabia

While Saudi Arabia does not seek an all-out war, the Houthis are continuously testing the patience of the kingdom. Saad bin Tuflah al-Ajmi, former information minister of Kuwait, stated that Saudi Arabia is still considering its military options, but its restraint indicates vital interests that Riyadh perceives to be at risk.

However, Houthi attacks on Saudi territory and their advances along the Yemeni coast have made continued restraint more difficult. The Saudi-led coalition has announced that Houthi missile and drone attacks on the cities of Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif injured 13 civilians on Monday.

Battlefield Developments in Yemen

The battlefield in Yemen continues to evolve. The Houthis have seized strategic areas such as Mocha, Dhubab, and Perim Island, expanding their control along the Yemeni coast in the Red Sea. In contrast, government forces backed by Saudi Arabia have regrouped and promised to reclaim lost territories.

Alberto Fernandez, former senior U.S. diplomat, believes that the Houthis may have overextended themselves and there is a possibility they could lose some of the captured areas. He described the Houthis as "arrogant" and emphasized that ideological motivations could put them at risk.

As Saudi Arabia turns to its allies for assistance, reports indicate that Britain is considering Riyadh's requests for diplomatic and military support. These requests have arisen as the escalation of conflict has extended risks beyond Yemen and impacted oil markets.
