These changes are not only dangerous in themselves but also result in the release of methane and carbon dioxide locked in the soil and trees. In other words, these ecosystems are becoming a new and concerning source of greenhouse gases.
Critical Consequences
The results of this study indicate that if this trend continues, the increase in greenhouse gas emissions could intensify global warming by up to 30%. This reality clearly highlights the serious crisis humanity is currently facing and underscores the urgent need for action to address this challenge.
Currently, scientists and environmental activists are seeking solutions that not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also aim to restore damaged ecosystems. These actions may include forest conservation, improved water resource management, and wildfire reduction.
