Near "Craig Gulbranson," they set up a mist net for the white-crowned sparrows. These birds have recently arrived from southern regions and are determined to feed on the insects that will soon descend on the tundra like storm clouds. The Arctic summer is very short, and white-crowned sparrows have only a few weeks to establish their territories, find mates, lay eggs, and raise their chicks on a diet rich in insects.
Research in the heart of frozen nature
Scientists collect blood, feather, and fecal samples from each captured bird to determine what they are feeding on and how this pattern changes throughout the summer. This information not only aids in a better understanding of bird nutrition but may also indicate ecosystem changes in response to climate change.
