Amit Shah Expands Implementation of Uniform Civil Code in India

Amit Shah, the Home Minister of India, emphasized on Sunday at a press conference in New Delhi that the government is working to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in all states governed by the Hindu nationalist party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This code, aimed at replacing diverse personal laws based on various religious traditions, has faced significant criticism and concerns from Muslims.

Details of the Implementation of the Uniform Civil Code

Amit Shah announced in this speech: "We have introduced the UCC in several states and I am confident that by 2029 it will be implemented in all 21 states under the National Democratic Alliance. This civil code, which includes laws related to marriage, divorce, and inheritance, is presented as a tool for standardizing personal laws in India. Currently, India, with a population of over 1.4 billion, has common criminal laws, but personal laws are regulated based on the traditions and beliefs of different communities.

Concerns of the Muslim Minority

The implementation of the UCC has faced negative reactions from Muslims. These groups believe that such actions could harm their religious rights. They are particularly concerned that this code may adversely affect the rights of Muslim women. Supporters of the Uniform Civil Code also believe that this code places the rights of Muslim women on par with others and points to ending polygamy, establishing equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, and mandating divorce proceedings in civil courts.

India, recognized as the most populous country in the world, has a population of about 220 million Muslims alongside a Hindu majority, thus having the third-largest Muslim population globally. This issue is particularly significant given the religious and cultural sensitivities in the country.
