China Responds to US Sanctions Against Iran and Russia

In response to the new US sanctions against Iran and Russia, China has clearly stated its position. Gao Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized at today's press conference (Thursday) that Beijing has always opposed unilateral and illegal sanctions and conducts its economic cooperation based on mutual interests and equality.

Opposition to Unilateral Sanctions

During this meeting, Gao Jiakun stated: "We do not cooperate against any third party in any way and strongly reject unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law." These remarks come as the US House of Representatives approved a broad sanctions bill against Iran and Russia with 262 votes in favor and 159 against on Wednesday night.

Details of the Sanctions Bill

The new bill specifically targets countries like India, China, Turkey, and several others, and if they purchase crude oil or natural gas from Russia or facilitate evasion of sanctions, tariffs of up to 100 percent may be imposed on them. This action follows the examination of India's purchase of Russian crude oil, while New Delhi has stated that its imports of Russian oil are aimed at ensuring the country's energy security.

Gao Jiakun also pointed out that China has always emphasized the right of countries to choose their own development paths and considers any action to restrict these rights unacceptable. According to him, countries should be able to make decisions based on their own interests, and no one can interfere in this process.
