Nairobi secured the hosting of the 2029 World Athletics Championships by winning against London, Munich, and Rome. This historic event will mark the first time this championship is hosted on the African continent.

Nairobi will host the World Athletics Championships in 2029. This historic decision, made during the World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest, makes Nairobi the first African city to host this major sporting event.

Intense Competition for Hosting

In this round of bidding, Nairobi faced strong competitors such as London, Munich, and Rome. However, ultimately, the World Athletics Council concluded that Nairobi's attractive and emotional proposal managed to win the council members' approval.

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, stated at a press conference following the announcement: "We were fortunate to have four outstanding bids for 2029 and 2031, and this decision was not made lightly." He also added that this decision means World Athletics Championships will be held in Asia, Africa, and Europe in the next three editions.

Kenya's Hosting History

Kenya has previously hosted several sporting events, including the World Under-18 Athletics Championships in Nairobi in 2017 and the World Under-20 Championships in 2021. Additionally, Nairobi hosted the African Athletics Championships in 2010.

Coe further emphasized: "It is important for the World Championships to come to Africa when there is a suitable host, a strong bid, and the right conditions. Nairobi has clearly shown that this moment is for the development of athletics in Kenya and across Africa, and this event will leave a remarkable legacy for the continent."

Infrastructure Developments and Future Impacts

According to Coe, the Nairobi team, which previously failed in its bid to host the 2025 World Championships, has returned this time with a stronger proposal and the Karasani Stadium, which is undergoing complete renovation. This stadium is set to be ready ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Hosting the World Athletics Championships in Nairobi not only represents a significant achievement for Kenya but also greatly increases hopes for the growth and development of athletics in Africa. This event could help nurture sporting talents in the region and inspire future generations.
