Russia's Growing Role in Supporting the Niger Government Following Failed Coup

Niamey, Niger – The failed coup in Niger revealed President Abdourahamane Tiani's growing reliance on Russian support amid threats from his own security forces.

Attack on Air Base 101

On August 29, soldiers identifying themselves as armed forces for the revival of the homeland coordinated an attack on Air Base 101 located at Niamey International Airport, the presidential palace, and the national broadcasting network. During the clashes, a statement was issued incorrectly announcing that Tiani had been ousted.

Units loyal to the president held the palace for one night, while about 200 soldiers from the Russian African group, using drones and bolstered by support from Mali and Libya, assisted in retaking the air base. At least 27 people were killed in the incident, and around 100 insurgents were arrested.

Russia's Role and Domestic Challenges

This coup demonstrated Tiani's dependence on Russian support at a time when his own security forces turned against him. Nigerien forces maintained control of the presidential palace while Russian personnel and equipment helped loyal forces reclaim the key air base.

Analysts believe that internal organizational grievances and heavy casualties suffered by Niger's military were primary reasons for this coup. There is a significant gap between soldiers on the front lines and those protecting the government. Young soldiers are typically sent to the front lines, while senior forces are stationed in less threatened areas, increasing dissatisfaction.

Tiani expelled French and American forces in 2023 and 2024, and Russian African group forces entered Niger to support the military government instead of Western support. However, this coup showed that Moscow's role goes beyond assisting in the fight against armed groups.

Alongside Russia's role, claims have also been made regarding the connections of French and Emirati interests to this coup. These claims have yet to be independently verified. These events serve as a warning for the relationships among military governments in the region and the existing challenges in securing Niger.
