China Faces Challenge of Rising Oil Prices and Limited Supply Options

China is currently facing serious challenges in oil supply. Oil prices in the country have reached their highest level, and this situation is due to significant disruptions in oil exports from the Middle East. While Beijing is trying to secure its energy resources, it is also striving to prevent further increases in global oil prices.

Disruption in Oil Pipelines

Saudi Arabia has been forced to shut down a key pipeline that was an important route for transporting oil to China and other Asian markets. This pipeline, which transports crude oil from the Arabian Peninsula to the Red Sea, was closed following attacks by a group linked to Iran in Iraq. The closure of this pipeline has also disrupted two other vital routes for Middle Eastern oil exports to China.

Impact of War and Sanctions

Access to Russian and Iranian crude oil has also been complicated due to U.S. sanctions and other restrictions. This situation has led Chinese refiners to seek more resources in more distant markets. This competition for oil supply is putting additional pressure on prices in China and globally.

According to analysts, reviving oil flows from the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blocked, has become an immediate economic and diplomatic priority for Beijing. This comes as negotiations between Xi Jinping, the President of China, and Donald Trump, the President of the United States, are approaching.

Before the war began, China imported about 12 million barrels of crude oil daily and produced another 4.4 million barrels domestically. Currently, China's crude oil imports in the second half of the year have averaged 8.1 million barrels per day.

China is trying to meet its oil needs by increasing production from refineries and rebuilding its reserves. Additionally, Russia is recognized as the largest supplier of crude oil to China, with a significant portion of its oil reaching China without passing through Middle Eastern chokepoints.
