The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting today to discuss developments in Yemen and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This meeting comes in the wake of intensified maritime attacks and threats in the Red Sea.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, October ٢٤, ٢٠٢٣, in New York to discuss recent developments in Yemen and the situation of the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This meeting is taking place amid heightened threats to maritime security in the Red Sea and ongoing attacks by the Houthis on areas near this strategic waterway.

Field Developments and the Capture of Mokha

In recent days, the Houthi group has managed to take control of the coastal city of Mokha, located near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This action, especially as the Bab al-Mandab waterway is recognized as one of the main maritime routes in the world, has raised serious concerns about maritime security and global trade. This capture is seen as a significant shift in the field equations in Yemen and could have wide-ranging repercussions.

The Strategic Importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait

The Bab al-Mandab Strait is located at the southern entrance of the Red Sea and is recognized as one of the most important maritime routes between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, continuing to the Indian Ocean. The distance of this waterway from the village of Dhabbah on the Gulf of Aden coast is only ٣٦ kilometers and from the coastal city of Mokha is ٨٤ kilometers. Given that this strait is part of the maritime route leading to the Suez Canal, any disruption in the security or movement of ships in this area could have widespread impacts on maritime trade routes between Asia and Europe.

The current situation necessitates immediate action and international coordination to address threats to maritime security in this region. Members of the Security Council will discuss possible solutions to ensure the security of this waterway and prevent any further tensions in the future during this meeting.

This emergency Security Council meeting is seen as an important step towards maintaining international security and ensuring the safe passage of ships in international waters. The increasing tensions in Yemen and threats from armed groups underscore the importance of this meeting and have prompted Security Council member countries to consider immediate and effective solutions.
