Guterres: The Security Council is paralyzed in the current situation

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Wednesday at a press conference in New York, expressed his views on global challenges and regional crises. He criticized the current structure of the Security Council, describing it as a reflection of the world of past decades, and added that in the current situation, the Security Council is "paralyzed."

Criticism of the Security Council and the situation in Palestine

Guterres emphasized that "geopolitical divides and powers that violate international law have hindered the proper functioning of the council." He also expressed concern about the situation in Palestine and implicitly criticized the lack of cooperation from the Israeli regime in implementing the Gaza peace plan. The Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that the gradual annexation of West Bank lands and the actions of settlers, sometimes supported by security forces, are "absolutely unacceptable."

The Yemen crisis and neglecting the roots

Continuing, Guterres referred to the Yemen crisis and, expressing concern about the current situation, called for an end to ethnic cleansing and ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid. Without mentioning the Saudi coalition's attacks on Yemen, he condemned the attacks by the Yemeni army and popular committees on the infrastructure of the Saudi aggressors and stated that "a military solution to the Yemen conflict is unlikely." This comes as experts believe that as long as the roots of tension, including the presence of foreign forces and occupation, are ignored, Guterres's recommendations for "de-escalation" and "diplomacy" will reach a dead end.

The status of other crises and the need for dialogue

The Secretary-General of the United Nations described the situation in Sudan as a "horrific and devastating crisis" and warned against foreign interventions in this conflict. He also emphasized the necessity of an immediate ceasefire regarding the Ukraine crisis as a step towards a just and lasting peace.

In response to a question about the possibility of a mediating meeting between Tehran and Washington, Guterres stated that the United Nations can only play a facilitating role when the parties are willing to engage. He clarified: "There is no solution to the crises related to Iran without dialogue, and these negotiations can take place at the United Nations or elsewhere."
