Italy Deploys Warships to Protect Shipping in Bab el-Mandeb

Guido Crosetto, the Italian Defense Minister, announced that his country will deploy warships to the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait in an effort to protect shipping. This decision has been made to ensure the safe passage of Italian commercial vessels through this key waterway. Crosetto stated that Italy will not wait for joint decisions from the European Union and emphasized, "We have the necessary capabilities to protect this passage."

Strategic Importance of Bab el-Mandeb

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, is considered one of the busiest shipping corridors in the world. This vital waterway is crucial for the transport of oil, gas, and container traffic to and from the Suez Canal. According to statistics, approximately 12 to 15 percent of global trade passes through this strait. It separates Yemen from Djibouti and Eritrea and is only about 30 kilometers wide at its narrowest point.

The importance of this strait has increased, especially after Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year. At that time, political and military developments in the region prompted Saudi Arabia to seek alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz and to utilize pipelines and routes in the Red Sea. In this context, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become one of the last main arteries for shipping oil from the Gulf to global markets.

Challenges and Threats to Shipping

Control of this strait has been disputed for years, with the Yemeni government, Houthi rebels, and regional forces alternately holding parts of its coastline. In recent weeks, with the onset of attacks by Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, the security situation in this waterway has become significantly complicated, and Ansar Allah's access to the area has increased. These developments pose a major barrier to international shipping, especially given Ansar Allah's history of attacking vessels and naval ships associated with the United States and its allies in the region.

The United States and the European Union have previously taken measures to protect commercial vessels from Yemeni threats in this area; however, these efforts have been hampered by escalating conflicts in Yemen and heightened tensions. In this context, Italian warships could play a significant role in ensuring maritime security in this strait and contribute to stability in international shipping.
