Turkey announced that it will suspend flights of the private Iranian airline Mahan Air due to sanctions from the U.S. Treasury Department. This suspension will begin on September 21 and will include all flights to and from Iran.

Turkey will soon suspend flights of the Iranian airline Mahan Air due to new U.S. sanctions. This decision was made particularly due to the U.S. Treasury Department's sanctions against Turkish ground service companies that provided services to this airline.

Details of the Flight Suspension

According to the information provided, this ban will come into effect on September 21 and will affect all Mahan flights to and from Iran. This comes as the U.S. Treasury Department announced a package of sanctions earlier this month against Iranian civilian airlines and their ground service providers.

Sanctions and Their Impact on Turkish Air Services

The sanctions include three Turkish companies named S Sistem, Mes Cargo, and Sky Phoenix, which provided Mahan Air with services such as aircraft parts supply, general sales services, and aircraft purchases. A Turkish official stated that these sanctions have directly impacted the service chain of this airline in Turkey and created serious risks for any Turkish entity providing services to Mahan Air.

The official added: "The risk has now extended to any Turkish entity providing services to Mahan Air, from airport operations and ground services to ticket issuance and banking services. This could lead to service disruptions and prompt further investigations."

Impact on Other Flights

Other Turkish officials also emphasized that this decision does not mean a total ban on all Iranian airlines, but Ankara will continue to assess the risks associated with other airlines. This assessment will include bilateral aviation agreements with Tehran, flight safety, and potential additional sanctions from the U.S. that could expose Turkish companies to further penalties.

Mahan Air regularly operated flights to Turkey, including at least three flights daily between Istanbul and Tehran. The company confirmed on Friday that it would suspend its flights to and from Turkey starting September 21 and also announced the suspension of its services to Oman and Georgia.
