Escalation of Tensions in Yemen
Tensions in Yemen have intensified since mid-July, when government-aligned forces attacked the airport in Sanaa. This attack coincided with the landing of a plane carrying a delegation of Houthi leaders from Iran. The Houthis have blamed Saudi Arabia for this action and declared war against the country.
In the past week, the Houthis have made significant advances in coastal areas and have succeeded in capturing the important port of Al-Mokha. These advances have raised serious concerns regarding the security of shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and its impact on global trade.
Meanwhile, Burnham faces a significant challenge. He is concerned that if he provides military support, he will be seen as a supporter of Donald Trump's war against Iran, while public opinion in Britain is strongly opposed to this war. Previously, former British Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer had provided more support to Saudi Arabia against the Houthis.
It seems that Burnham is considering a range of requests from Saudi Arabia, but no final decision has been made yet. In this context, the continued advances of the Houthis could have more serious implications for regional security and the global economy.
