Mark Carney Travels to Europe to Strengthen Trade Relations with the European Union

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, will travel to Europe this week from September 15 to 17. This trip aims to strengthen the strategic alliance with the European Union amid the ongoing trade war with the United States. Carney will visit the city of Strasbourg in France and Liverpool in the UK during this trip.

Business and Investment Opportunities

In his meetings with members of the European Parliament, Carney seeks to strengthen Canada's relations with the European Union in the areas of trade, investment, and security. A government statement has indicated that the goal of this trip is to reinforce Canada's sovereignty, and for this reason, the country is absolutely unwilling to lose its "rights in Brussels."

The Prime Minister of Canada has informed reporters that Canada is looking for an opportunity to diversify trade and investment, but has not provided further details in this regard. Carney emphasized that Canada is not seeking membership in the European Union but is looking to create a "unique alliance."

Trade Tensions with the United States and the Need for Diversification

Carney has highlighted Canada's over-dependence on the United States as a trading partner and pointed to the need for diversification in trade relations amid the escalating trade war with the Trump administration. Currently, more than 70% of Canadian goods are exported to the United States, with the value of these exports exceeding $300 billion annually.

Given that Canada's trade with the European Union currently ranks second compared to the United States, Carney hopes that by strengthening relations with the European Union, Canada can achieve more trade with Brussels. In 2025, the value of Canada's trade with the European Union reached €130 billion ($150 billion).

Analysts believe that closer ties with the European Union could provide more opportunities for travel, work, and retirement for Canadian citizens. This comes as similar agreements exist between the European Union and non-member countries in Europe, allowing them access to the EU's single market.

Carney also mentioned that Canada is looking to establish arrangements that would allow Canadians to live and work in Europe without a visa.
