The Commander of the Pakistani Army Urges Iran to Curb Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia

The Commander of the Pakistani Army has asked Iran to take action to curb Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. This request comes at a time when Saudi Arabia has repeatedly been targeted by missile and drone attacks from the Houthis in Yemen and Shia militants in Iraq in recent weeks.

Analysis of the Security Situation in Saudi Arabia

Recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have disrupted the country's key energy infrastructure and contributed to rising oil prices to their highest level since mid-May. Pakistani officials have urged Iran to warn the Houthis against further escalation of the conflict. If the mutual defense clause is activated under last year's security agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, Islamabad may be compelled to defend Saudi Arabia.

Discussions Between Pakistani and Iranian Officials

Field Marshal Asim Munir, the current leader of Pakistan, visited Tehran last month and met with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, and other political leaders. He has also had several phone calls with Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, the latest of which took place on Thursday. Munir has repeatedly emphasized the need to stop Houthi attacks during these discussions.

One Pakistani official involved in these discussions noted that Iran believes this is a matter between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, but it seems that escalating tensions benefit Iran's policies in the region. Meanwhile, the Pakistani army did not respond to requests for comment on this matter.

The Houthis, considered one of the most powerful members of the Iran-backed “Resistance Axis,” are primarily focused on achieving their domestic goals, and these attacks appear to also benefit the rise in global energy prices. Pakistan's efforts to consult with Iran highlight the importance and sensitivity of the issue in the event of further escalation of conflicts between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis.

In recent months, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have expanded their bilateral alliance into a broader defense pact with Turkey. Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, compared this agreement to NATO's fifth clause on mutual defense and emphasized that any military assistance should be based on the request of the country under attack.
