The U.S. House of Representatives Approves Comprehensive Sanctions Against Russia

The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a comprehensive sanctions plan against Russia in a bipartisan vote. The plan, drafted by the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, was passed with a vote of 262 to 159 and sent to President Donald Trump.

Purpose of the Sanctions and Reactions

This new law allows the President of the United States to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries like China and India that import energy from Russia. The plan also includes new sanctions against Russian officials, banks, and the fleet of oil tankers that help maintain the flow of Russian energy.

Vladimir Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, has been one of the main supporters of this plan and has recently pressured senators to expedite its approval. However, Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the House Democrats, has opposed the plan and warned of the dangers of using new tariff powers to harm U.S. allies.

Consequences and Impacts

Jeffries stated during the voting session, "The way this plan is written does not allow the President of the United States to easily impose sanctions against Russia. Moreover, there seem to be many legal loopholes in this plan that will hinder the effective implementation of sanctions."

This plan marks the first time Congress has taken action to pass legislation in support of Ukraine in over two years. Graham, who recently passed away, played a significant role in garnering Trump’s support for this plan. Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, welcomed the passage of this plan, describing it as a tool to increase pressure on the "Russian war machine."

After the vote, a group of Republicans and Democrats from the House and Senate celebrated at a bipartisan press conference. Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator from Connecticut and one of the authors of the plan, expressed hope that these sanctions would push Putin to the negotiating table and end the war. He said, "We have your number, Vladimir Putin."

Trump is expected to sign this plan into law.
