Alex Eala Emphasizes Her Determination to Compete in the Asian Games

Alex Eala, the prominent Filipino tennis player, has firmly announced that she will represent her country in the Asian Games starting on September 19. This decision comes as the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has not allowed her to participate in the competitions in China. Eala is recognized as the top-ranked player in the women's singles of the Asian Games.

Request for Exemption from WTA

John Ray Tiangco, the Secretary-General of the Philippine Tennis Federation (PHILTA), stated, "We have officially submitted a request for exemption and respect the WTA process. At the same time, Alex has made her decision to represent the Philippines in the Asian Games, and we fully support her."

Consequences of Not Competing in the Tournaments

The Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya overlap with the mandatory WTA 1000 tournaments in China starting on September 30. Not participating in these tournaments without official permission could lead to penalties and a drop in world ranking. Previously, Janice Jan from Indonesia withdrew from the Asian Games due to not securing an exemption to participate in the tournaments in China.

The President of the Philippine Olympic Committee, Abraham Tolentino, also emphasized that Eala will compete in the Asian Games despite the WTA's threats, stating, "The WTA has its own rules, and breaking these rules comes with penalties. But Alex will be in Nagoya for the flag and the country."

Support from Legislators for Eala

Eala's decision to represent her country has received support from legislators. Senator Erwin Tulfo stated that the government should assist Eala in paying the $10,000 fine imposed by the WTA if it occurs. He said, "If she is penalized for choosing to represent her people, shouldn't the government help her?"

This 21-year-old tennis player heads to the Asian Games after a successful season, which included winning her first WTA 1000 title last month and reaching the third round of the US Open. Before traveling to Japan, she will compete in the Singapore tournaments, where she won a bronze medal in both singles and mixed doubles in Hangzhou, China in 2022.

Tennis is one of the few sports where winning a gold medal at the Asian Games guarantees automatic qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, provided the player is ranked among the top 500 in the world.
