Arab Coalition: A Houthi drone was destroyed before entering the airspace of Mecca

The Arab Coalition led by Saudi Arabia announced that the Royal Saudi Air Defense forces successfully identified and destroyed a Houthi drone that intended to enter the airspace of Mecca on Saturday, October 27, 2023, at 18:50.

Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki, the spokesperson for the Arab Coalition, stated in a statement that the drone was identified south of the city of Mecca and was immediately targeted. This action was taken as a swift response to a serious threat from the Houthis and to ensure the safety of pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah.

Al-Maliki pointed out that this hostile and terrorist act is the second attempt to target the holy city of Mecca, emphasizing: "Attempting to target a sacred land that is the place of revelation, the land of prophecy, and beloved by millions of Muslims around the world is a shameful act." He also added: "This act will be another stain on the black record filled with the aggressions of the terrorist Houthis."

Houthi response to the claims

In response to these claims, the Houthis quickly reacted and denied the allegations regarding the threat to Mecca. A military source in Sanaa, under Houthi control, stated that there is no threat from Yemen towards Mecca and the claims made are not true. This source told the Houthi-affiliated television network "Al-Masirah": "We reject any claims of targeting Mecca and holy sites."

This exchange of claims and denials occurs amid ongoing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. The Arab Coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been involved in a war in Yemen since 2015, which has severely impacted the humanitarian and economic situation in the country.
