Britain's Economic Sanctions Against Israeli Settlements Begin

On September 8, 2023, Britain announced a ban on imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, initiating a new action in the economic sanctions against Israel. This move is part of broader efforts to impose economic restrictions on illegal settlements in occupied territories.

Ed Miliband, the UK Foreign Secretary, stated that these sanctions will include services such as construction, infrastructure, and financing related to settlements. According to him, this law is expected to be implemented within the next 6 to 9 months. This decision, especially after years of condemnation of settlements by European leaders without effective action, represents a significant shift in the economic policies of Britain and other European countries.

Eran Yashiv, an economics professor at Tel Aviv University, believes that if fully implemented, these restrictions will not have much impact and will not be felt. However, these actions could serve as a serious warning for the Israeli economy.

In this context, Lucy Kurtzer-Ellenbogen, a senior researcher at the Middle East Institute, emphasized that these sanctions have more diplomatic consequences than economic ones. She added that if the ambiguity surrounding the United States' reaction to these sanctions is taken into account, we may witness a chain reaction that gradually affects Israel's macroeconomy.

In response to these sanctions, Israel has strongly condemned these actions and announced that it may take retaliatory measures against Britain. This situation becomes particularly complicated ahead of Israel's elections on October 27, which may lead to changes in the current cabinet.
