The Chinese Defense Minister, Dong Jun, at the opening of the 19th Xiangshan Forum in Beijing, stated that countries around the world must avoid provocative actions and emphasized the need to pay attention to history and prevent the resurgence of ineffective historical trends. These remarks were made in a context where regional tensions, especially regarding Taiwan and the South China Sea, have increased.
Call for International Cooperation and Solidarity
In his speech, which was interpreted as an indirect criticism of Japan, Dong called for a new and inclusive approach to resolving international tensions. He said: "We must keep the lessons of history in mind and remain vigilant against all forms of latent hegemony, militarism, and historical revisionism." These statements come as China-Japan relations have severely soured due to recent comments by Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaiishi, who referenced a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.

Regional Tensions and China's Role
The Xiangshan Forum has been continuously strengthened as a military diplomatic platform for China over the past two decades and is now considered an alternative to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. This three-day event, which brings together hundreds of military officers, diplomats, and researchers from various countries, provides China with the opportunity to emphasize the necessity of a multipolar world while also amplifying the voices of developing countries.
In separate meetings with defense officials from Myanmar, Brunei, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia, as well as with ASEAN Secretary-General, Kao Kim Hoon, Dong emphasized the need for deeper military cooperation and common security. This approach reflects China's efforts to build stronger relationships with its neighbors and enhance regional security.
Some analysts had predicted that Dong would not directly criticize the United States or its regional allies. However, tensions in the South China Sea and Taiwan have become a serious challenge to regional security. In this speech, Dong did not directly criticize the United States or Japan but emphasized the need for solidarity and international cooperation.
