Houthis Strengthen Control Over Hanish Islands in the Red Sea of Yemen

The Houthis on Monday strengthened their control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea of Yemen by seizing the large and small Hanish Islands. These seizures occurred following the retreat of Yemeni government forces and their allies, indicating serious advances by the Houthis in this strategic area.

Importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait

The Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea, is one of the key chokepoints for maritime transport. This region has gained more significance, especially now that the Strait of Hormuz is under international pressure. By seizing these islands, the Houthis aim to strengthen their position against government forces and also to exert pressure on Saudi Arabia.

The seizure of the Hanish Islands is just part of the Houthis' military activities in recent weeks. This group has targeted Saudi oil infrastructure and shipping in the Red Sea for over a month, increasing pressure on global oil prices.

Missile Attacks and Humanitarian Consequences

Alongside the seizure of the islands, the Houthis launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on military targets in Saudi Arabia on Monday. These attacks triggered security alerts in cities near the Yemeni border, such as Khamis Mushait and Abha. According to Saudi Civil Defense, one of these projectiles fell near the Yemeni border, injuring two people and damaging infrastructure.

The conflict in Yemen has severely impacted civilian life. Reports indicate that from September 3 to date, around 150 civilians have been killed in the clashes, and over 200 have been injured. Additionally, thousands have fled the fighting and sought refuge in safer areas, leading to an increase in displacement in the region.

These developments come as Yemeni government forces attempt to reorganize themselves and plan counterattacks against the Houthis. However, it seems that the Houthis' advances have faced little resistance from government forces.

The continuation of these clashes could push Yemen back into a full-scale civil war, a conflict that has resulted in the deaths of over 150,000 people and a humanitarian disaster in the country over the past decade. In this sensitive situation, ceasefires established in recent years are collapsing, raising concerns about the resurgence of fighting.
