Kyrie Irving, NBA basketball star, announced that he will pay the fine of Azeez Al-Shaheer, a player for the Houston Texans American football team, due to honoring Hind Rjab, a Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
Al-Shaheer's Fine and Irving's Reaction
Al-Shaheer was fined $11,941 by the National Football League (NFL). This fine was issued for violating equipment and uniform rules during the Houston Texans game against the Buffalo Bills last weekend. After the fine was announced, Irving reacted on Twitter, stating that he would "resolve the issue."

Honoring Hind Rjab and Supporting Palestinian Rights
Azeez Al-Shaheer, 29, wrote the name of Hind Rjab on his eye tape during his last NFL game. Hind Rjab was a five-year-old girl who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Gaza. A phone call with the Palestinian Red Crescent documented her final moments, and this became an Oscar-nominated documentary. Al-Shaheer, as a Black American Muslim, has frequently spoken about the plight of Palestinians and has faced fines for his positions.
In January, he was also fined for displaying the message "Stop Genocide" on his eye tape. While this message did not specifically refer to any conflict, it was widely interpreted as relating to Gaza and Sudan.
Criticism of the NFL and Social Support
Al-Shaheer's fine was issued at a time when the owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft, confirmed that he asked Ed Sheeran to remove Macklemore from his tour in the United States. Kraft is known for his anti-Semitic positions during the genocide in Gaza in 2023.
The NFL has faced criticism for Al-Shaheer's fine, with one social media user calling the action "inhumane." Additionally, Omar Suleiman, a prominent American Muslim scholar, questioned whether Al-Shaheer would have faced such punishment if he had written the name of Holocaust victim Anne Frank on his tape.
Last season, Al-Shaheer was praised for using his platform to highlight the issue of Hind Rjab, one of many children killed in Gaza by the Israeli government.
