Meeting of the Prime Minister of Britain and Canada on Defense and Artificial Intelligence Cooperation

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of Britain, and Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, watched a football match at Everton Stadium in Liverpool on Wednesday. This meeting, which was the first bilateral encounter between the two officials, aimed to strengthen defense cooperation and discuss the risks of artificial intelligence.

Agreement on the Necessity of Collaboration Between Government and Technology Sector

The office of the Prime Minister of Britain stated in a press release that the leaders of the two countries agreed on the importance of collaboration between governments and the technology sector to ensure online safety and address the risks of artificial intelligence. This meeting followed an increase in discussions among companies active in the field of artificial intelligence regarding the dangers of this technology.

Challenges in Artificial Intelligence Regulations

Currently, neither Britain nor Canada has specific legislation to regulate artificial intelligence. Britain has adopted an "innovation-led" approach since March 2023, meaning that instead of enacting independent laws, regulators in various sectors have been allowed to monitor artificial intelligence. On the other hand, Canada's initiative titled "Artificial Intelligence and Data Act" was halted in January 2025 due to the suspension of Parliament, and this law has yet to be revived.

The Canadian government currently relies on privacy laws and a voluntary industry code. This situation reflects the challenges both countries face in addressing rapid advancements in the field of artificial intelligence.

During the meeting, Burnham and Carney also emphasized the need to strengthen international relations and defense cooperation. These relations have become particularly important in the current context of increasing trade tensions with the United States.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has also proposed that Canada be recognized as the first "partner member" of the European Union. This could help solidify Canada's relations with Europe while also demonstrating to Britain that international cooperation in line with the national interests of both countries can lead to further advancements.
