Samir Othman Al-Sheikh Sentenced to 60 Years in Prison in the U.S. for Torture

Samir Othman Al-Sheikh, a former Syrian military officer, was sentenced to 60 years in prison in the United States for torturing prisoners during Bashar Al-Assad's presidency. His sentence was issued on Thursday by a federal court in Los Angeles. In March, a jury found him guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit torture and three counts of torture during his time in the notorious Adra prison from 2005 to 2008.

Horrific Tortures in Adra Prison

The judge in this case stated during the sentencing: "His behavior was inhuman, unimaginably brutal, and almost indescribably savage." Human rights organizations and the United Nations have accused Syrian government officials of committing widespread human rights violations in prisons, including torture and arbitrary detentions of thousands of individuals, often without informing their families.

U.S. officials stated that Al-Sheikh transferred some prisoners to a part of Adra prison to suppress political dissent, where they were kept in small solitary confinement cells and tortured. During a two-week trial, three victims described being beaten while hanging from ceiling pipes and mentioned a device that bent their bodies in half from the waist.

Victims' Testimonies and Strong Requests

One victim testified that Al-Sheikh stepped on this device with his foot. Justice officials emphasized in a note submitted to the court that "the defendant knew that what he was doing was wrong. However, due to the power he held and the belief that he would never be held accountable, he ordered and participated in the torture of his victims."

This note included statements from several victims. One of them, Nidal Shekhani, said he still hears the screams of others pleading for mercy, repeating: "Let me go, let me go." Justice officials had requested the judge to impose a minimum sentence of 80 years for Al-Sheikh, while his lawyers sought a five-year sentence, citing his age of 74 and his medical and cognitive issues.

Al-Sheikh arrived in the United States in 2020 and applied for citizenship, but the Department of Justice stated that he lied about his past. Federal officials arrested him at Los Angeles International Airport in July 2024.
