Hans-Joachim Watzke, Vice President of the German Football Association, called for Gianni Infantino's removal from the presidency of FIFA. He expressed his reasons for this request at an artificial intelligence festival in Berlin.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Vice President of the German Football Association (DFB), strongly criticized Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, at an artificial intelligence festival held on Thursday in Berlin, stating that he should resign without any ifs or buts.

Reasons for Criticism of Infantino

Watzke announced that the DFB is one of the few federations that has not signed a letter of support for Infantino's re-election as FIFA President in the next six months. He said, "He must go, without any ifs or buts."

FIFA Peace Prize and Other Controversies

Watzke pointed out three key points that work against Infantino. The first was the FIFA Peace Prize, which was launched by Infantino and is set to be awarded to Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, in December 2025. Watzke said, "Infantino invented this award himself and made decisions about it, which is completely insane."

Watzke also referred to the suspicious handling of the red card for Folarin Balogun during this year's World Cup. The American forward was sent off in the Round of 16, but after a phone call from Trump to Infantino, his one-match suspension was lifted. Watzke commented, "It cannot be that when someone is sent off, the President calls the FIFA President and strangely everything is immediately reversed. This is madness."

The third issue was a project that was unveiled on July 28 and canceled four days later. This project related to the creation of a commercial company that would open to private investors and became a focal point for the rebellion against Infantino. Watzke said, "This is completely insane. No one knew about it, not even FIFA's own vice presidents and the FIFA Council were aware of it."

Brand Neuendorf, President of the DFB, also stated in an interview that the time for Infantino's resignation has come. He said, "The trust relationship with Gianni Infantino under this FIFA leadership has completely broken down. It is important that this Infantino system comes to an end."

Currently, Infantino is the only candidate for the FIFA presidency in the elections scheduled for March 18, 2027, and nominations are open until November 18.
