Thousands of Yemenis in Taiz Camps After Houthi Attacks

Fatima Mohammed Saleh, a 70-year-old Yemeni woman, is one of the countless individuals who have been displaced from Taiz province in southwestern Yemen due to recent clashes between government forces and the Houthis.

Houthi Attacks and Displacement of People

The Houthi rebel group, also known as Ansar Allah, now controls many areas in northwestern Yemen, including the capital, Sana'a. The village of Saleh in the Maqbana area was at the center of the Houthi attack, and this group has succeeded in seizing all the Red Sea coasts, including the port city of Al-Mokha.

According to United Nations reports, at least 100,000 people have fled their homes, with most leaving with very few belongings due to the rapidity of the Houthi attacks. Saleh, who had to abandon her wheelchair due to her inability to navigate the rough terrain, said, "This attack was very extensive, and we had never seen anything like it. Bullets were flying everywhere, and we had no choice but to flee."

Critical Situation in the Camps

Ali Al-Shamiari, the director of the executive unit for managing refugee camps in Taiz province, announced that from August 10 to September 15, 65,845 people have been displaced. About 95 percent of these individuals come from five areas that witnessed the most clashes: Jabal Habashi, Al-Mafer, Maqbana, Al-Wazi'ah, and Mawza.

In the Mashrafa camp in Wadi Bakhwan in Taiz province, the situation is extremely critical. Osama Al-Wafi, the supervisor of this camp, described the situation as "catastrophic and heartbreaking," stating that over 1,500 families have entered the camps in the past six days, but many are living in the open due to a lack of adequate shelter.

The Al-Munij camp in the Al-Bayrin area, about 40 kilometers southwest of Taiz city, has become a temporary refuge for Yemenis. Residents of these camps have pointed to a shortage of basic services, including drinking water and sanitation. Haji Saif Qaid Thabit, 73, reported on the difficult living conditions in the camp, saying, "We were displaced because of the war, and now we are just looking for shelter."
