Western Sanctions Against Israel Lead to Intensified Diplomatic Crisis

Last week, Western countries, particularly the UK, France, and Canada, announced sanctions against Israel due to illegal settlement activities in the West Bank. These sanctions, which are limited and focused on goods related to the settlements, indicate a shift in diplomatic approach towards Israel. In response to these sanctions, on September 9, Israel gave the UK 30 days to close its consulate in East Jerusalem.

Consequences of Sanctions on Diplomatic Relations

Israel's strong reaction to the Western sanctions reflects the country's determination to counter international pressures. Edward Miliband, the UK Foreign Secretary, stated in Parliament that the government can no longer remain indifferent to what he termed the "ethnic cleansing of Palestinians." These statements and the announced sanctions led to swift reactions from Israel, including the cessation of training for Palestinian Authority security forces and the expulsion of British staff from the Gaza coordination center.

Increase in Violence in Gaza and the West Bank

As the diplomatic crisis intensified, the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank was also deteriorating. According to reports, on September 10, Israeli fighter jets targeted a family of four in a residential project in Bethlehem, following several airstrikes throughout the week. Additionally, statistics from the Gaza Ministry of Health as of September 14 indicated that since October 2022, 73,786 people have been killed and 174,771 injured.

Meanwhile, the condition of hospitals and the transportation system in Gaza is nearing collapse. Al Ahli Hospital announced that its main generator has failed due to a lack of fuel and spare parts. Furthermore, the Gaza Public Bus Drivers Union announced that due to a shortage of parts and fuel, it would stop transporting doctors and nurses starting September 16.

In the West Bank, violence is also on the rise. On September 12, an Israeli soldier shot a Palestinian youth named Qasim Hassam in the leg in Faqou'a, near Jenin, while he posed no threat to Israeli forces. Additionally, on September 11, reports emerged of an attack by Israeli assailants on five Palestinian men on the Ramallah-Jericho road, resulting in one of them being injured.

In conclusion, these developments indicate increasing international pressures on Israel while simultaneously escalating military actions and violence in the occupied territories. As diplomats strive to reach new agreements, the ground realities in Gaza and the West Bank appear increasingly concerning.
