Top Belgian universities condemned the lack of cooperation from the government in assisting 13 Palestinian students who have received scholarships to continue their studies in Belgium. These students urgently need evacuation due to the critical situation in Gaza, but the Belgian government halted its evacuation plans last week.
Academics Criticize the Belgian Government
In a letter sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the heads of 10 top Belgian universities, they expressed disappointment over this decision, accusing the government of using these students as "political bargaining chips" in a "disgraceful political deal." This situation is indicative of the erosion of human values in government policymaking.

Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, has supported the evacuation of these students but has faced opposition from the conservative Flanders party led by Bart De Wever. This party has requested that in exchange for approving the evacuation, the government respond to some of their political demands regarding immigration.
Disappointment and Lack of Political Will
Prévot stated that one member of the five-party coalition has called for concessions on immigration, including the establishment of deportation centers, in exchange for agreeing to evacuate the students. The university heads pointed out in their letter that the obstacles raised are actually due to a lack of political will, not insurmountable limitations.
Academics' criticisms come at a time when these students are seen as symbols of hope for a better future in the difficult conditions of Gaza. Belgium, as a country that should respect human values and human rights, is under pressure to assist these students. This crisis not only affects the individual lives of these students but also negatively impacts Belgium's international reputation.
As war and insecurity continue in Gaza, the Belgian government's inaction in cooperating with universities clearly indicates a lack of will to support human rights and social responsibility.
