Death of Three People Due to Flooding in the Navajo Nation in New Mexico

At midnight on Wednesday, 12:30 AM (GMT 06:30), heavy rainfall in New Mexico caused flooding that claimed the lives of three people. These incidents occurred near the community of Newcomb in northwestern New Mexico.

Incident Details

Buu Nygren, the President of the Navajo Nation, announced that police responded to reports of individuals who had been swept away by floodwaters. In this incident, two adults and one child lost their lives. Nygren, expressing condolences to the families of the victims, urged residents to exercise caution in areas affected by the rainfall.

In a statement, he said: "No words can ease the pain of losing a loved one, and our hearts are heavy, especially knowing that three lives have been lost. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and loved ones who are grieving today. We hope that in the difficult days ahead, you are surrounded by the strength and love of your family and community."

Weather Warnings

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, issued warnings on Tuesday about the potential for severe storms in the coming days. These warnings were reiterated on Wednesday, stating that humidity levels would reach high levels in mid-September.

NWS Albuquerque announced in a social media post: "A flash flood warning is currently in effect for one-third of western New Mexico and the southern central mountains. However, flash flooding may occur anywhere in central and northern New Mexico today." Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah through Thursday. Flash flood warnings have been issued for sections of northwestern New Mexico, as well as for large areas of central and northern Arizona.

These deadly incidents come just weeks after three hikers were swept away by heavy rainfall in the Grand Canyon, a popular tourist destination in Arizona, with dozens of others rescued.
