Lebanon's President Calls for Security Agreement with Israel After Troop Withdrawal

Lebanon's President, Joseph Aoun, announced at a press conference in Beirut that Lebanon is seeking a security agreement with Israel, provided that the country withdraws its forces from Lebanese territory. Aoun described this agreement as a step towards a future peace agreement.

Need for Negotiations and Ending Hostile Status

Joseph Aoun, on the eve of his trip to France, stated that Lebanon has no choice but to negotiate and warned that the alternative could lead to a costly war. He identified the immediate goal as ending the hostile situation and establishing security along the borders, emphasizing that the move towards a peace agreement should be gradual.

Lebanon's Determination to Disarm Hezbollah

The President of Lebanon also stressed the country's determination to disarm Hezbollah, stating that this decision "is not negotiable and is not a matter for discussion." However, he emphasized Beirut's willingness to resolve this issue peacefully and to prevent further conflict or civil war. Aoun stated, "Our goal is not conflict. We are determined to resolve this issue peacefully."

Seeking International Support and the Role of the Temporary Force

Joseph Aoun, ahead of meetings with Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, and Abdullah II, the King of Jordan, said that the aim of this meeting is to secure international support for the Lebanese army. While the UN peacekeepers' mission (UNIFIL) is set to end on December 31, 2026, Aoun stated that Lebanon is seeking a temporary international force to prevent a security vacuum in the south of the country.

He also emphasized that the best and most optimal option remains the extension of UNIFIL's mission, but if necessary, Lebanon would accept a temporary European, Arab, Asian, American, or UN-supported force as well.

Relations with Iran and Israeli Elections

The President of Lebanon further stated that Lebanon has no objection to relations with Iran, but emphasized that these relations should be based on mutual respect and non-interference in Lebanon's affairs. In response to questions about the upcoming Israeli elections, Aoun stated that the key issue for Lebanon is whether future Israeli governments will seek "stability, security, and no war" at their borders.
