Gold Mine Collapse in Sudan Claims at Least 70 Lives

The collapse of a gold mine in West Kordofan state, Sudan, has claimed the lives of at least 70 people. This incident tragically occurred while workers were attempting to extract gold, unaware of the serious dangers threatening them.

Details of the Incident

The incident happened last night at one of the gold mines in the West Kordofan region. Khair Al-Sayed Jabara, one of the rescued workers, told reporters that he and other workers spent the night digging to reach the survivors. He noted that heavy equipment is needed to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

Amin Suleiman, another worker, also stated that the shafts were so close together that each collapse would pull down the adjacent shafts as well. This situation has made it very difficult for the survivors to be rescued.

Local sources have reported that the high number of casualties is due to the lack of adherence to safety standards and rescue equipment. The Sudan Doctors Network, a medical group based in Khartoum, announced that efforts to search for survivors are still ongoing and there is a possibility of an increase in the number of casualties. This group also criticized the lack of safety measures at the site, deeming this negligence a serious threat to the lives of workers.

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023 has impacted working conditions in areas controlled by this group. Mining activities in these areas, without proper safety standards and equipment, endanger the lives of civilians.

Sudan is recognized as one of the leading gold producers in Africa, with a significant portion of the country’s gold being extracted informally and in unlicensed mines. This situation not only poses risks to workers but also exacerbates economic and social problems.
