Palestinian Children in Gaza Experience Back to School Amid Destruction and Insecurity

Palestinian children in Gaza, while September signifies the return to classrooms in many parts of the world, are faced with a bitter and devastating reality. For millions of children around the globe, this month means reuniting with friends and teachers, but for these children, another year begins without access to safe and quality education.

Severe Educational Situation in Gaza

A report by "Save the Children" indicates that around 1.5 million school-aged children in the occupied Palestinian territories are starting their fourth consecutive school year without the possibility of education. Educational infrastructure in Gaza has been severely damaged, with nearly 98 percent of school buildings facing destruction and damage. Over 93 percent of these schools require reconstruction or renovation, and 81 percent have been directly targeted by attacks.

Impact of Destruction on Children

Statistics from Gaza's educational authorities show that as of October 2023, over 20,000 students and 532 teachers have lost their lives. At least 165 schools and educational institutions have been completely destroyed. This destruction includes basic items such as desks and chairs that were present in classrooms. Reports indicate that approximately 440,000 desks and chairs, 142,000 tables, and 9,300 blackboards have been lost.

Palestinian children like "Amjad," a 13-year-old student, clearly express that school is not just a place for learning; it is a place for life and refuge. He says, "School means life," and this statement clearly shows that the destruction of schools means losing a place for stability and security for these children.

Despite these conditions, "Lama," a 13-year-old Palestinian girl, says that we are still determined to continue learning. She states that Palestinian children are striving to achieve their dreams, and nothing can stop them.

"Save the Children" has warned that the consequences of this situation are not limited to absences from classes. Schools are not only places of learning for children but also venues for social interaction and psychological support. This situation is especially critical for children facing violence and displacement.
