Phone Conversation Between Asim Munir and Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Regional Tensions

Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, emphasized two critical points for reducing regional tensions during a phone conversation on Wednesday with Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister. This call took place while Araghchi was in Beijing and was part of Islamabad's active diplomacy.

Emphasis on Cessation of Houthi Attacks

In this conversation, Asim Munir referred to the issue of stopping Houthi attacks on Saudi oil facilities and called for the revival of direct negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Government sources in Pakistan reported that Araghchi's response to these requests was "encouraging," but no further details were provided.

Recent Developments and Concerns

This phone call came after claims of intercepting a drone belonging to the Houthis near the city of Mecca. Ansar Allah of Yemen strongly denied this attack. In response to these developments, Ismail Baqaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, rejected Tehran's intervention in Yemen's decisions and emphasized the independence of Yemeni forces.

The spokesperson for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry also expressed serious concern about the situation in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait during a press conference and called for the cessation of military actions in this vital route. He also referred to bilateral defense agreements with Saudi Arabia and a trilateral agreement with Turkey and Saudi Arabia, stating that Islamabad is committed to these obligations, although operational details will remain confidential.

Diplomatic Proposal for Crisis Resolution

Pakistan emphasizes that the only way to resolve crises is through diplomacy and dialogue, and that coercive actions will only complicate the situation further. The war in Yemen and the maritime blockade of Riyadh by the Houthis since July have increased conflicts in the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, leading to a spike in oil prices in global markets.

During this phone call, Asim Munir and Araghchi discussed ways to revive direct negotiations with the United States. Araghchi stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to return to the negotiating table if the United States stops hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz and adheres to the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding."

At the same time, Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, during a meeting with Araghchi in Beijing, urged both sides to exercise restraint and mentioned the possibility of this issue being raised in the upcoming meeting between the Presidents of China and the United States. Direct negotiations between Iran and the United States, facilitated by Pakistan, have been halted due to disagreements over security guarantees and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
