Saudi Arabia is in a state of strategic shock

Saudi Arabia is in a critical situation on Saturday, as this kingdom faces an increase in attacks from Ansar Allah forces in Yemen and a lack of sufficient military support from the United States. This situation clearly demonstrates the heavy costs that the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran has imposed on the Middle East.

Increase in Ansar Allah Attacks

In just the past two weeks, Saudi Arabia has faced multiple attacks from the east, south, and north. In late August, a Saudi oil tanker was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the death of two sailors. On Friday, Ansar Allah forces, heavily supported by Iran, captured territory in a major global shipping route and defeated Saudi-aligned forces in Yemen. These attacks clearly threaten Saudi oil exports and increase pressure on the global economy.

Additionally, Saudi officials were forced to shut down a vital oil pipeline due to a drone attack by an Iraqi militia affiliated with Iran. This pipeline, which served as an alternative route for Saudi oil exports to the Red Sea, is now under threat.

Saudi Frustration with the United States

While Saudi Arabia seeks appropriate military responses to the threats from Ansar Allah, the country's frustration with U.S. policies is clearly evident. Michael Ratney, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, stated that the Saudis are currently feeling a real sense of despair. Especially given that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s request to President Trump for military action against Ansar Allah has been met with indifference.

Analysts also believe that Saudi Arabia does not want to fight Ansar Allah alone. Abdulrahman Al-Rashed, a columnist close to the Saudi government, has pointed this out and called for international support to confront this group. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump shows no willingness to enter this conflict, which has created further despair among Saudi leadership.

Given these circumstances, it seems that Saudi Arabia will now lean towards diplomacy. Barbara Leaf, former Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, believes that there is no military solution to deal with Ansar Allah, and Saudi Arabia may seek difficult agreements with its neighbors and Iran.

This complex situation has created new challenges for Saudi Arabia. While this country has invested billions of dollars for years to build close relations with the United States, it now appears that due to U.S. reluctance, it will be forced to reevaluate its policies.
