The number of sea migrants to Europe has sharply decreased, but mortality remains high

The number of migrants arriving in Europe via sea routes has sharply decreased since the beginning of this year. According to a new report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 60,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in Europe so far in 2026, which is 39 percent less than about 98,000 during the same period last year.

Increase in deaths at sea

Despite the decrease in the number of migrants, the report indicates that at least 2,292 people have lost their lives or gone missing while attempting to cross the sea, an increase from last year's figure of 1,999. Many of these individuals perish on overcrowded and unsuitable boats departing from the shores of Libya.

The dual story of the statistics

Ami Pop, the Director General of IOM, stated: "These numbers tell two stories simultaneously. Fewer people are arriving in Europe compared to last year, but many still lose their lives in the attempt to reach safety." She also emphasized the need for sustainable international cooperation to save lives and uphold human rights.

According to the report, the Mediterranean and Atlantic sea routes are recognized as the most dangerous maritime routes in the world. IOM officials have reported that the number of people crossing through the Central Mediterranean, the main route from North Africa to Italy, has decreased by more than half, but the number of deaths on this route has increased from 844 to 996.

Greece has also faced a smaller decrease in the number of arrivals, while the number of deaths has increased from 284 to 417. Spain has also witnessed a decrease in the number of migrants, while at the same time, 879 people have lost their lives on routes leading to this country.

The Migration Organization has stated that most individuals attempting to migrate are fleeing war and persecution. According to surveys conducted by IOM, most migrants on the Central Mediterranean route cite economic problems as the main reason for their departure, while war and targeted violence follow in the rankings.

The organization has also reported that over 104,000 people have recently fled the war in Yemen, alongside large displacements from Lebanon and Syria due to ongoing conflicts in the region.
