Trump Administration Announces Direct Talks with Iran

The Donald Trump administration announced in a press conference on Wednesday that the United States "hopes to come close to ending the war" with Iran and reported on its direct talks with officials in Tehran. These statements come as conflicts in Yemen have intensified and pressures on global energy supply have increased.

Rejection of Direct Talks Claims

While Trump claims direct talks, there has yet to be any confirmation from Tehran regarding this. A senior Iranian official stated yesterday that no talks will take place unless Iran's conditions are met. Tehran is particularly demanding U.S. compliance with an agreement signed in June.

In response to a reporter's question about whether he has recently received any news from the Iranians, Trump said he has "spoken directly" with them. This claim is particularly significant as negotiations between Washington and Tehran are usually conducted through intermediaries such as Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman.

Diplomatic Developments and China's Role

In recent days, Iran's diplomatic activities have also been pursued more through phone calls with officials from other countries. For example, on Thursday, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, held a phone call with the commander of the Pakistani army to discuss regional developments and mutual concerns.

During this call, which took place in Beijing, Araghchi emphasized the need for "restoration of calm in the region and friendly, peaceful relations with neighbors." Additionally, China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has urged the United States and Iran to "restore calm in the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, Trump has planned to meet with leaders of Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the conflicts and their impact on oil exports. This comes as diplomatic negotiations have stalled following the collapse of an agreement between Washington and Tehran mediated by Pakistan.

Iran has also announced that it is ready to return to the agreement if the United States complies with it. These developments occur as the Yemen crisis has significantly impacted the global energy market.
