European and Arab military officials gathered in Paris on Thursday to discuss the needs of the Lebanese armed forces and to talk about the imminent end of the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) peacekeeping mission. This meeting comes amid growing concerns over the potential resumption of Israeli military attacks in southern Lebanon.
Meeting with Senior Officials
The discussions will be chaired by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, along with Joseph Aoun, the President of Lebanon, and Abdullah II, the King of Jordan. A senior military official from the United States, who is active in Middle Eastern security matters, will also be present at this meeting.

Concerns Over Security Vacuum
This meeting follows several rounds of talks between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by the United States. In June, a framework agreement was signed between Israel and Lebanon, but this agreement did not lead to Israel's withdrawal from the occupied areas of southern Lebanon, and the country has continued its attacks. Last night, Israeli forces carried out attacks across southern Lebanon, which, according to the National News Agency of Lebanon, resulted in damages and casualties.
In the past week, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 13 people in a southern Lebanese city, including six children. This situation marked one of the deadliest days of Israeli bombardment in recent weeks.
New Options for International Mission
The main topic of this meeting in Paris is to examine the security vacuum that may arise after the imminent withdrawal of the UNIFIL mission, which has been stationed in Lebanon for nearly 50 years. While both Lebanon and France are in favor of extending the UNIFIL mission, the United States and Israel have yet to show support for extending this mission.
Officials present in Paris intend to explore options for a new international mission, particularly with the support of France and Italy, which will operate outside the framework of the United Nations mission. These missions will focus on training, equipment, information sharing, and advisory support for the Lebanese armed forces.
France has stated that it wants to clarify the "context, parameters, and methods" of deploying these forces at this meeting to ensure strong international support for the Lebanese forces. Concerns over the potential resumption of Israeli military attacks, despite the declared ceasefire, are increasing in Lebanon.
Additionally, the disarmament of the Lebanese armed group, Hezbollah, is considered a key condition for Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Joseph Aoun has reiterated his determination to disarm this group, but "without confrontation" with it.
