Jimmie Åkesson's voting in Rinkeby indicates a three percent decline for the Sweden Democrats. He made controversial remarks about immigration in this diverse area.

Jimmie Åkesson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats (SD), cast his vote on Sunday in Rinkeby, a suburb of Stockholm where most residents are from minorities. Many viewed this act as a political stunt, during which he expressed controversial opinions about the state of Sweden.

After voting, Åkesson told reporters: "Rinkeby doesn't look like Sweden... I think Sweden shouldn't look like this." His remarks were heavily criticized, and Somaya Ali, an 18-year-old who works in the area, said: "This was a political provocation designed to elicit reactions." While working at the Jarva i samverkan, a network of local NGOs, she pointed out that such statements exacerbate social tensions.

Historic Decline of the Sweden Democrats

Although the final election results are not yet clear, it is evident that the Sweden Democrats have faced a decline in votes for the first time in their history in a parliamentary election, dropping from 20.5 percent to 17.5 percent. This party, which has neo-Nazi roots, has repeatedly targeted Islam and called for a halt to the construction of new mosques in 2023. Åkesson also suggested that Sweden should consider demolishing mosques that spread anti-democratic and anti-Swedish propaganda in the future.

Political analysts have warned that despite the center-left opposition bloc taking an early lead on Monday morning with 176 seats against the right-wing coalition led by Ulf Kristersson with 173 seats, the number of seats is not yet finalized and some votes still need to be counted. This situation could lead to a political deadlock that may last for weeks.

Reactions to Åkesson's Remarks and the Election Atmosphere

Åkesson arrived in Rinkeby at a time when this area, due to its cultural diversity, has always been a target of right-wing criticism. Zack, a 27-year-old resident, said: "Many of us have become more resilient against the SD. This party is also seeking to ban the hijab and scare people with posters saying 'We will make Sweden Sweden again.'"

Meanwhile, Sara, a 25-year-old business owner, recalled the chaos that erupted in several Swedish cities in 2022 when Rasmus Paludan, a far-right Danish-Swedish politician, burned the Quran in Rinkeby Square. She said: "This was a provocation of anger, but it didn't achieve its goal."

In the end, Åkesson was met with a warm reception during his visit and easily entered the polling place. He shook hands with a young boy who opened the door for him and peacefully cast his vote.

Somaya Ali concluded by saying: "Åkesson should look beyond the concrete and gray blocks of Rinkeby and see the beauty and diversity of this community. Ultimately, it is culture and community that make a place, not its appearance."
