Mark Carney welcomed the proposal for Canada's associate membership in the European Union in the European Parliament and considered it an opportunity to strengthen democracies. He emphasized the need for deep cooperation in strategic areas.

Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, welcomed the proposal for this country's associate membership in the European Union on Wednesday in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. In his speech, Carney described this coalition as an opportunity to strengthen democracies and emphasized the importance of deep cooperation between Canada and Europe.

Emphasis on Shared Values

Carney stated at the meeting: "We are not unstable allies. We are not seeking agreements with zero outcomes. We have shared values that we have always fought for, and we must remain vigilant in defending them." These remarks were met with applause from European representatives and demonstrated Canada's determination to strengthen relations with Europe.

Strategic and Digital Cooperation

The Prime Minister of Canada further noted that both sides should move towards "seamless digital trade" and enable young people to work and study on both sides of the Atlantic. He added: "Canada and Europe must achieve strategic independence through deep cooperation in all strategic areas, including critical minerals, defense industrial capacity, artificial intelligence, energy security, and payments."

Carney also referred to the trade challenges that Canada and the European Union face, including pressures from the Trump administration and increasing competitors like China. He reminded that these collaborations could help strengthen both parties' positions against these challenges.

Trump's Reaction to the Associate Membership Proposal

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, reacted to this proposal and threatened to take serious actions against the European Union if this proposal is advanced. He stated: "If they take this action and I see it as a hostile act, I will impose very heavy tariffs on Europe." Trump described this proposal as "ridiculous" and said that if the intention is good, there is no problem, but if there is a bad intention, heavy tariffs will be imposed on Europe.

A spokesperson for the European Commission also responded to these threats, stating that the proposal to strengthen cooperation with Canada is in no way hostile and is solely aimed at enhancing the joint power of both parties. He added: "This proposal is not against anyone, but rather to strengthen our joint power."

Carney's proposal for Canada's associate membership in the European Union may require approval from member countries, and further details on this matter have not yet been provided. However, these statements reflect Canada's serious determination to strengthen relations with Europe and create a strong front against global challenges.
