Revealing the Military Use of Artificial Intelligence by the Houthis and Their Control Over the Red Sea

The Houthis (Ansar Allah movement) in Yemen are continuously enhancing their military capabilities and have recently been using artificial intelligence models to manufacture advanced weapons. This group has not only managed to target passing ships in the Red Sea using drones but has also expanded its efforts to produce guided weapons.

Control Over the Mokha Port and Strategic Islands

Following the capture of the historic port of "Mokha" and the islands near the "Bab al-Mandab" strait, the Houthis have solidified their control over this strategic chokepoint at the southern end of the Red Sea. "Nicholas Kulish" emphasized in a report that this group has become the most capable non-state actor in the Middle East.

"Timothy A. Lenderking", the former U.S. special envoy for Yemen, stated in a meeting at the "Middle East Institute": "The Houthis seize every opportunity to create and test their capabilities." A report from the company "Anthropic" also indicates that this group has used the "Claude" artificial intelligence model to create highly accurate weapons.

Increase in the Arms Supply Chain

Peter Salisbury, a professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, pointed to a significant increase in the volume of imported goods to Yemen for weapon manufacturing, stating that larger parts are produced in areas controlled by the Houthis. This group has been able to establish more supply chains from countries like China, which help supply drone parts.

"Kevin Donegan", a former commander of the U.S. Fifth Fleet, noted that the Houthis are sourcing a large portion of their necessary items using the global black market supply chain. However, they still require some key components that are sourced through clandestine routes.

Despite these developments, the Houthis emphasize that they have no intention of targeting American vessels and have stressed their non-attack on international commercial ships. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's balancing and deterrence efforts against them seem to have reached a deadlock. "Amberin Zaman" noted in a report that Saudi Arabia's policy of "cautious deterrence" in dealing with the Houthis has become a serious challenge.
