Saudi Arabia Destroys Houthi Drone Near Mecca

Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that the country's air defense successfully destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca. The drone was targeted before entering the restricted airspace of this holy city. A spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition fighting the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen confirmed the news and described it as a sign of Saudi Arabia's firm determination to defend the security of the two holy Islamic sites and the pilgrims.

Preventive Measures by the Saudi Coalition

Turki al-Maliki, the coalition spokesperson, stated in an interview on Wednesday that the security of Mecca and Medina, the two holy sites for Muslims, is a "red line" and that the coalition will take necessary measures to deter the Houthis. This incident occurred amid repeated attacks by Iran-backed forces, prompting Saudi Arabia to issue security warnings across the country, including in Mecca and other cities.

Background of Houthi Threats

Maliki also referred to previous attempts by the Houthis to target Mecca, noting that this is the second time the group has tried to attack the city. He mentioned that previously, in July 2017, the Houthis had fired a ballistic missile towards Mecca. These attacks reflect the escalating tensions in the region and their implications for the security of Saudi Arabia and its interests in the Middle East.

While Saudi Arabia emphasizes the security of the holy sites, a Houthi military source has denied any threats to Mecca or other holy places in response to these actions. These statements were published through the Houthi-affiliated news agency, Saba News Agency.

Given that Mecca is always the focal point for Muslims around the world, with millions of pilgrims traveling there each year, such threats could seriously impact the conduct of the Hajj and the safety of the pilgrims.
